I want to talk about something that I believe is one of the most important conversations we can be having right now.

Not because it is fashionable. Not because it is controversial. But because I see the effects of it in my clinic every single week — in the young people who sit across from me feeling anxious, exhausted, overwhelmed and disconnected from themselves in ways they cannot quite explain.

We are living through the largest uncontrolled experiment ever conducted on the developing human brain.

And the instrument of that experiment fits in the palm of a hand.

A Little Context

The first iPhone was released in 2007. The first generation of children who grew up with smartphones from early childhood are now in their late teens and early twenties. We are only just beginning to see — and understand — what that has meant for their developing brains.

And what the neuroscience and psychology research is revealing is deeply concerning.

I want to be clear from the outset — this is not a piece about demonising technology. Smartphones and social media are part of the world our children live in and will continue to live in. Pretending otherwise helps nobody.

But understanding what these devices are doing to the developing brain — and why young people under sixteen are particularly vulnerable — is information that every parent, teacher, therapist and young person themselves deserves to have.

Because knowledge is power. And in this case, knowledge could be genuinely life changing. 💛

First — What is Actually Happening in the Brain?

To understand why smartphones are so uniquely powerful — and potentially harmful — for young brains, we need to understand a little about how the brain works.

Your brain has a reward system — a network of structures including the nucleus accumbens that responds to pleasurable experiences by releasing dopamine — the brain's primary motivation and reward chemical.

Dopamine is not bad. It is essential. It drives us to seek out food, connection, achievement and joy. It is the chemical of anticipation — released not just when we get a reward but when we expect one.

And this is exactly what smartphone designers have spent billions of dollars understanding and exploiting.

Every notification. Every like. Every new post. Every message. Every scroll that reveals something new and unexpected.

Each of these triggers a small but powerful dopamine release.

The brain notices this. The brain likes this. The brain begins to crave it.

And it begins to organise its behaviour around getting more of it.

This is not a character flaw in the young people caught in this cycle. This is neurochemistry. And it has been deliberately engineered by some of the most sophisticated technology companies in the world, with access to the very best behavioural psychologists and neuroscientists money can buy.

As one former Google design ethicist famously put it — "a thousand engineers worked on making this as addictive as possible."

Why Under Sixteens Are Particularly Vulnerable

Here is the critical piece of neuroscience that I think every parent needs to understand.

The prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for impulse control, decision making, long term planning and emotional regulation — is not fully developed until the mid to late twenties.

In adolescence it is still very much a work in progress.

This means that young people are neurologically, structurally and literally less equipped to resist the pull of the dopamine reward cycle that smartphones create. They are less able to put the phone down when their rational mind tells them to. They are less capable of overriding the compulsive checking behaviour. They are more susceptible to the emotional volatility that heavy social media use creates.

The brain most harmed by excessive smartphone use is the brain least able to protect itself from it.

And the tragedy is that the harm compounds over time — because the developing brain is not just affected by smartphone use. It is actively shaped by it. The neural pathways being built during adolescence — the brain architecture that will underpin adult functioning — are being formed in the context of constant stimulation, constant comparison and constant distraction.

The implications of this are only beginning to be understood.

Sleep — The Silent Casualty

Of all the ways that smartphone use affects young brains, the impact on sleep is perhaps the most immediately and measurably harmful — and the most consistently overlooked.

Here is what we know:

The blue light emitted by screens directly suppresses the production of melatonin — the brain's natural sleep hormone. Using a phone in the hour before bed delays the onset of sleep, reduces the depth of sleep and dramatically reduces the amount of REM sleep achieved.

And REM sleep — the dreaming stage — is not optional for young brains. It is the stage during which emotional experiences are processed and neutralised, memories are consolidated, learning is embedded and stress hormones are regulated.

A young person who is chronically sleep deprived due to late night phone use is not just tired. They are:

  • Emotionally dysregulated — more reactive, more tearful, more easily overwhelmed

  • More anxious — because a sleep deprived brain perceives threats that a rested brain would dismiss

  • Less able to concentrate and learn — with direct implications for academic performance

  • More vulnerable to depression — because sleep deprivation directly reduces serotonin production

  • Physically less well — because immune function, growth hormone release and physical repair all happen during deep sleep

The research linking poor sleep in adolescents to mental health difficulties is overwhelming. And the research linking late night phone use to poor sleep in adolescents is equally clear.

Yet the average teenager in the UK goes to bed with their phone. 💛

The Anxiety and Comparison Engine

Social media presents every young person who uses it with an endless, curated, filtered and algorithmically optimised stream of other people's highlight reels.

The most beautiful moments. The most popular people. The most exciting lives. The most perfect bodies. The most enviable friendships.

All of it relentlessly, breathlessly perfect.

And all of it profoundly, systematically false.

The young brain — still developing its sense of identity, still working out where it fits in the social world, still forming its fundamental beliefs about its own worth and belonging — is exquisitely sensitive to social comparison. This is not weakness. It is developmental biology. Adolescence is the stage at which social belonging and peer acceptance are neurologically critical.

But social comparison against an algorithmically curated impossible standard is not the same as normal social comparison amongst peers. It is a rigged game that nobody can win.

The research linking heavy social media use in adolescents to increased rates of anxiety, depression, low self esteem and body image difficulties is now overwhelming and consistent across multiple countries and cultures.

Professor Jean Twenge — one of the world's leading researchers on generational mental health — has documented a dramatic and precisely timed deterioration in adolescent mental health that correlates almost exactly with the widespread adoption of smartphones and social media. The timing is not coincidental. 🌿

Attention, Concentration and the Disappearing Deep Focus

There is another casualty of the smartphone era that receives less attention than anxiety and sleep — but which has profound implications for young people's development, learning and future wellbeing.

The ability to think deeply.

The constant switching between notifications, videos, posts, messages and apps that characterises heavy smartphone use is actively rewiring the young brain's capacity for sustained attention. Every time a notification interrupts a task — or a young person reaches for their phone out of habit — the brain's ability to maintain deep focus is weakened.

Deep focus — the kind required for reading a book, following a complex argument, solving a difficult problem, creating something original — is not just an academic skill. It is the foundation of meaningful intellectual and creative life. It is how human beings do their best thinking.

And it is increasingly under threat.

Research by Gloria Mark at the University of California found that after an interruption it takes an average of 23 minutes to fully return to a task. For a young person whose phone interrupts them dozens of times per day the implications for learning, concentration and academic achievement are significant.

Social Skills and Emotional Development

Perhaps the most quietly profound impact of heavy smartphone use on young people is the one that is hardest to measure — the displacement of face to face human connection.

It is in face to face interaction that young people learn to:

  • Read facial expressions and body language

  • Manage conflict and repair relationships

  • Sit with boredom and discover their own inner world

  • Develop empathy through genuine human presence

  • Tolerate the discomfort of difficult emotions without immediately reaching for a distraction

  • Build the deep friendships that are the bedrock of lifelong wellbeing

Screen based interaction is not the same as face to face connection — neurologically or developmentally. It does not produce the same oxytocin release. It does not develop the same social neural pathways. It does not build the same emotional resilience.

When screen time replaces rather than supplements genuine human connection in adolescence — during the developmental window when social and emotional skills are most actively forming — the consequences can be lasting. 💛

What I See in My Clinic

I see it every week.

Young people — bright, sensitive, capable young people — who are anxious in ways they cannot explain. Who cannot sleep. Who feel inadequate despite having so much to offer. Who are overwhelmed by the noise in their own heads. Who have lost touch with who they are beneath the performance of who they feel they need to be online.

I am not suggesting that smartphones are the sole cause of these difficulties. Young people's lives are complex and the factors that affect their mental health are many and varied.

But I am saying — clearly and from experience — that the relationship between heavy smartphone use and the mental health difficulties I see in young people is real, consistent and impossible to ignore.

What Can We Do?

I am not going to suggest that the answer is simply to take phones away — though there is growing evidence that phone free schools produce measurable improvements in wellbeing, concentration and social connection amongst students.

But there are meaningful things that parents, carers and young people themselves can do:

🌿 Charge phones outside the bedroom overnight — this single change has the most immediate and measurable impact on sleep quality

🌿 Create phone free times — mealtimes, the hour before bed, family time — these boundaries matter more than most people realise

🌿 Talk openly about social media — helping young people understand the curated, filtered and algorithmically manipulated nature of what they are seeing reduces its emotional impact

🌿 Model the behaviour you want to see — young people notice how the adults in their lives relate to their own phones

🌿 Encourage activities that build genuine dopamine — exercise, creativity, face to face socialising, time in nature — these build the reward system in healthy, sustainable ways

🌿 Take seriously the signs of struggle — anxiety, poor sleep, low mood, irritability and social withdrawal in young people always deserve attention and support

And it starts with understanding.
